There is a Facebook page titled "W.O.O.F., Warren Ohio Old Farts," which was started by an ex-Warrenite, Royal "Butch" Kershner who now resides in Arizona. At last count this page has more than 1,600 people who have joined, and I am assuming a very high percentage are in Warren or from Warren.
Recently, there was an event scheduled in Warren that was put together by Butch and he named it WOOFstock, pretty ingenious since most members are old enough to remember Woodstock. People from all over the country flew or drove back to their hometown of Warren to join with us who still live here for a day of going back to our "roots." We all met at 10 a.m. at the Hot Dog Shoppe, a favorite eating place of everyone's for dogs with sauce. At 2 p.m. everyone went to the Sunrise for their famous pizza, and that evening we all went to Up a Creek to listen to a local band with members who also reside in Warren playing our music: oldies. It was a great day spending time with old friends and new ones, all with one thing in common: Warren, Ohio!
I am writing this for one reason. A lot of the news media had been contacted for this event including the Trib because we thought this was newsworthy and a boost news wise and financially because of the money that was being spent in Warren at restaurants, hotels, gas stations, etc. There was one photographer from the Trib that came into the Hot Dog Shoppe and took a few pictures and left; nothing was ever reported in the paper or TV and no picture was ever printed.
With all the bad press this area receives, something like this should have made the news; it was a positive event that a lot of people enjoyed and would have been nice for all to see, hopefully making this event bigger next year. An "Onion" to all the media; shame on you, there are more things out there than bad news and dirt going on in our city.
Reporting good things can only help.
