Tue. 4:38pm: Judge opposes early release for statue thief

WARREN - Common Pleas Judge Andrew Logan today informed the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections that he objects to an early release program for a 31-year-old Hubbard man who was convicted in August for desecrating a military veteran's grave and stealing a statue that he tried to sell for scrap.

Logan's opinion echos a similar one drafted in the form of a motion Friday by a prosecutor who also opposed entry into a what's called an Intensive Program Prison - a halfway house that would lead to an early release for Richard Couturiaux.

Couturiaux, who blamed his crimes on drug use, was sentenced by Logan to 18 months in prison in the case that was monitored closely by local veterans. The sentence included time that was combined with a conviction in a second, unrelated case.
