Fri. 5:45pm: Kasich backs use of facial recognition system

COLUMBUS (AP) - Ohio Gov. John Kasich is backing the use of facial recognition technology by law enforcement officials to identify possible criminal suspects.

Kasich's remarks today follow the decision by Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine to convene a group of judges, a prosecutor and others to study the use of the sophisticated software by authorities.

Since June, local and state law enforcement officers could use the facial recognition software to match images of possible suspects or victims with Ohio driver's license photos. Critics have called the technology's use intrusive and have complained that DeWine didn't notify the public about its launch.

The Columbus Dispatch reports Kasich clarified his remarks this afternoon after earlier in the day he seemed to have indicated he was unaware of authorities already using the software.
