NILES - A Mineral Ridge man was fatally shot early Friday morning, apparently by the resident during a burglary attempt, police said.
Niles police were called about 12:30 a.m. on a report of a burglary in progress with one shot fired at a home at 1539 Niles Cortland Road. Police were met at the door by the resident, who told them people he didn't know who attempted to break into his home through two doors.
He told police he fired at a door, but didn't know if he'd hit anyone.
Police said they found the body of a man, later identified as Terry D. Allen, 36, of Mineral Ridge, who appeared to have died from an apparent gunshot wound.
"Right now we're in the very early stages of the investigation," Niles police Chief Rob Hinton said.
Hinton said police still have a lot of unanswered questions. He said it doesn't appear Allen and the resident had any history together, and police have not determined any reason Allen may have targeted the home.
However, there is no reason to believe the resident will face any charges at this point, he said.
