HOWLAND - Warren C. "Juney" Dodson, 63, formerly of Leavittsburg, passed from this earth to heaven at approximately 11 a.m. Monday, April 15, 2013. Warren was also known to many as "June Bug" or "Dod."
He was born March 27, 1950, the son of the late Warren C. "Stoney" Dodson, who passed away in 1974, and Mary P. Dodson, who passed away in 2008.
A 1968 graduate of Leavittsburg High School, Juney was a member of the varsity baseball team, on which he was the catcher. When Leavittsburg brought back football in the fall of 1966, Juney was a member of the varsity team. He was proud to be a Leavittsburg Yellow Jacket.
Warren C. Dodson
He was an employee of General Motors, Lordstown, retiring in 2005 after 35 years.
A nationally recognized and accomplished softball player, Juney was a member of many local teams, including powerhouses such as Sandy's Tires, Allegheny Steel, Coaches Huddle and The Satellite, the last team being SOI-UAW 1112. He traveled with this team throughout the United States to many tournaments.
The highlight of his softball career was in the 1987 Class A Industrial National Tournament in Dothan, Ala., where he was named MVP of the tournament, batting .760 throughout. The UAW 1112 team also won the National Championship that year.
Juney was an avid sports fan. He loved the Cleveland Browns as well as the Cleveland Indians. For 35 years, he belonged to a local Strat-O-Matic Football League, winning a place in the Strat Super Bowl this year. Because he couldn't attend, his son, Keith, represented him well and brought home the victory for his dad.
Juney also enjoyed golfing, fishing, playing cards and ping pong.
His favorite pastime was listening to oldies - The Intruders, The O'Jays, soulful recordings and any song by any Motown artist. He had a passion for his collection of old 45 records - listening to them and playing "Name That Tune" with anyone who thought they could beat him. Most would fail.
He will be sadly missed by his son, Keith Warren Dodson of Warren, formerly of Southington; a brother, Leon (Karin) Dodson; Juney's sisters, Rosalie Davies of Champion, Cindy Kinnison, Brenda Kagy and Sherry Dodson, all of Howland; his nieces, Bonnie (Nick) Frankos of Howland, Vickie (fiance Jim Meyer) Brocious of Champion, Tina Davies of Warren, Mary Kagy of Leavittsburg, Katie Dodson of Howland, Pam (Rob) Canfield of Leavittsburg and Debbie Shoulders of New Jersey; and his nephews, Vincent Liebal of Howland, Stephen Liebal of Warren and Mike Davies of Pittsburgh. Friendship memories will be carried on by many, but especially his lifelong friend, Denny Pemberton; and his former wife, Keith's mom, Suzette Ridenour of Southington.
Also preceding him in death was his brother, Gene R. Dodson, who passed away in 1962.
Pastor Rodd Meyer will officiate the service, which will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Lane Family Funeral Homes, Roberts-Clark Chapel, 180 Garfield Drive, Warren, OH 44483, where calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to the Hospice of the Valley, 9803 Sharrott Road, Poland, OH 44514.
