WARREN -- Democrat Congressman Timothy J. Ryan has decided against running for Ohio governor in 2014, according to a statement released by his campaign.

In an email, Ryan, long rumored to be one of the top contenders to run for the party's nomination, said, ``it has become increasingly clear to me that I will be able to do more for the region, state and country by continuing to serve in the House of Representatives.''

Ryan said he is in a ``unique position'' to continue to improve the 13th District and that he looks forward ``to continuing this important work'' to help the state reach its full potential.

One Democrat, Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald, announced earlier this week he was forming an exploratory committee for a run next year. It's a move that allows FitzGerald to raise money without officially declaring his candidacy.

Others rumored to be in play for the Democratic nod next year are former congresswoman Betty Sutton and Richard Cordray, the former treasurer and attorney general in Ohio who now runs the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
