Howland United Methodist Church and their 10-member praise band, Firmly Grounded, are welcoming members of the congregation to a new contemporary style.
The church has added a special praise service at 7 p.m. the fourth Sunday of each month.
''People can come in and enjoy the music and praise God in a different way,'' said Pastor Matt Darrin.
The new service started in January and the praise band takes part in the Sunday morning worship.
"The praise team will be singing praise songs every Sunday to create a blended worship of traditional and contemporary, "Darrin said.
According to Darrin, the blended worship has traditional hymns mixed with contemporary songs by the praise band. The congregation has been wanting to make the regular services blended, he said.
"We had a vision in place and wanted to give this a try. Our congregation has been getting a lot of younger people in the church. We wanted to see the blended worship with traditional mixed with contemporary,'' he said.
The congregation has grown in the past year, from 145 to 235 each Sunday, Darrin said. The praise service is designed to introduce the people who aren't used to contemporary praise music and also to reach outside the church. The change has helped the church grow, he said.
Clay Colley, a member of Firmly Grounded, and who started with the church last summer as an accompanist, said there are more traditional worship songs during the Sunday worship, however the evening service is more performance music.
''We had a desire to grow and reach the next generation,'' Colley said.
The performance music is a way to bring contemporary worship into a church that has had traditional worship, he said.
Church member Tim Torch said this is definitely a different way of praising God.
