Sutliff celebrates Valentine's Day with open house

The Sutliff Museum, located on the second floor of the main branch of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, 444 Mahoning Ave. N.W., Warren, will have a Valentine Open House from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The public is invited to have some punch and cookies along with a visit to the Victorian parlor featured in the museum that was created with furniture, paintings and memorabilia from the home where Levi and Phebe Sutliff lived from 1850 through 1914. Their daughter then maintained the home in authentic Victorian style until her death in 1955.

Throughout the month of February, the Sutliff is showing Victorian valentines. The cards, from a private collection, include silk greeting cards and three-dimensional honeycomb tissue creations. Lovely art work and sweet messages are prominent. For more information, call 330-399-8807, Ext. 121.

TNP offers rain barrel/garden program

Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership will host a free program on rain barrels and rain gardens at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Western Reserve Room at the Raymond John Wean Foundation, 147 W. Market St., Warren.

Amy Reeher, watershed coordinator with Trumbull Soil & Water Conservation, will speak on the topics of rain barrels and rain gardens. The presentation will provide information on what rain gardens and rain barrels are, the benefits they provide, the ideal location to install one, and the costs associated with construction and maintenance.

Polish Arts Club celebrates Chopin

The Polish Arts Club of Youngstown will have its 77th Scholarship Art, Music & Tea Reception from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Butler Institute of American Art, Butler North, 530 Wick Ave., Youngstown.

This year's program is entitled a "Celebration of Mazurkas" and will feature the work of Polish-born composer Fryderyk Chopin. Chopin was inspired to focus on seriously composing his own unique mazurkas in 1830, the year of the November Uprising, a Polish rebellion against the Russian government. Chopin's work will be analyzed by Ewelina Boczkowska, assistant professor of musicology at Youngstown State University, and performed by pianist Cicilia Yudha, assistant professor of keyboard musicianship at the Dana School of Music.

The program will be followed by a traditional high tea with homemade cookies and treats. Admission is free on open to the public.

Method 8 presents Black History Month programs

Method 8 will present two programs this weekend in conjunction with Black History Month at its offices, 4800 Market St., Boardman.

A program from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday will focus on Henry Garden's book ''The Slave Ship Atlantic'' and will try to give the audience a sense of what it was like to travel aboard an actual slave ship. A second program from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday will imagine what it would be like for a slave to come back from the dead and observe the present state of black culture.

Dinner theater benefits Rescue Mission

34west Theater Company will stage its production ''Andrew and Peter: A Play Called Fish Eyes'' at Antone's Banquet Centre, 8578 Market St., Boardman on March 15 as a benefit for Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley.

This live theater production featuring 34west founders, Jeff Querin and Stephen Baldwin, is a light-hearted story about two disciples and their journey with Jesus, and it includes their "calling," the Beatitudes, the feeding of the five-hundred and other memorable moments.

Doors open at 6 p.m., and a dinner buffet will be available starting at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for the dinner-theater production are $50 and must be purchased in advance. For more information, call 330-744-5485 or download an order form at www.RescueMissionMV.org.

Columbiana theater stages 'Wizard of Oz'

Crown Theater Productions will stage the musical ''The Wizard of Oz'' for a two weekend run at the Main Street Theater, 5 N. Main St., Columbiana

The show is based on the 1939 film classic and features music and lyrics by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg. Erich Offenberg directs a cast of more than 80 performers with Jackie Stevens as Dorothy, Roger Gaskins as Scarecrow, Wayne Morlock as the Tin Man and Offenberg as the Cowardly Lion.

Show times are 8 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Feb. 22-23 and 2 p.m. Sunday and Feb. 24. Tickets are $13 for adults and $10 for children ages 10 and younger. For tickets or more information, call 330-482-9915.

Winter art market event set for Sharon

More than 70 artists from Trumbull and Mahoning counties and western Pennsylvania will sell and display their work at Art's Alive in the Dead of Winter, a fine art market at the James E. Winner Jr. Arts & Culture Center, 98 East State St., Sharon, Pa.

Paintings, jewelry, pottery and salvage art creations will be among the items available at the event, which will utilize all three floors of the ACC. Entertainment will be provided by Max Schang and area eateries will be selling food and refreshments.

The event runs from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday, and admission is $5. For more information, call 724-813-6938.

Cleveland Zoo offers frog event

Cleveland Metroparks Zoo will offer its fourth annual Fairytales & Frogs event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday in its climate-controlled RainForest, where the temperature always is 80 degrees.

Visitors will learn all about the environmental importance of frogs and the unique role they play in fairytales and stories throughout history. Guests can meet the zoo's larger-than-life frog mascots and even a princess or two. Children can get nose-to-nose with real frogs during Get Close encounters, have the chance to separate amphibian fact from fiction with the animal keepers, listen to fairytales, play games and make a frog craft.

All children ages 11 and younger receive free admission to the Zoo and The RainForest with a paid adult admission, and everyone is encouraged to come dressed as a princess, prince or frog. For more information, call 216-661-6500.
