February 7, 2013
Tribune Chronicle | TribToday.com

YOUNGSTOWN - Former police Chief Jimmy Hughes has filed to run for mayor in the May Democratic primary.

Hughes, who retired in September 2011 as chief after more than 30 years on the department, ran for Mahoning County sheriff in 2012 but also lost in the May 2012 Democratic primary.

Hughes joins a field that includes President of Council Jamael Tito Brown, former law director and county Commissioner John McNally, and Matthew Smith, who lives on the North Side.

Current Mayor Charles Sammarone has filed to run for President of Council, the seat he held before taking over when former Mayor Jay Williams left to take a job in the President Barack Obama administration.
