Washington soars in ‘Flight’

New on DVD and Blu-ray:

"Flight" - Denzel Washington earned his sixth Academy Award nomination for his performance as an alcoholic / drug-using pilot who pulls off a heroic landing while chemically impaired but still must answer for his reckless behavior. In many ways, Washington's Whip Whitaker is the kind of rebellious anti-hero that the movies have celebrated for decades. But there's no room for "anti" before hero in this "Flight" plan, so Whip is going to take a beating until he takes responsibility for his behavior, even if it's largely self-flagellation.

Some slack pacing and a contrived finale hurt the overall impact of the movie, but they don't diminish the performances of Washington, Kathy Reilly, John Goodman, Bruce Greenwood and Don Cheadle or the plane crash sequence in the first half hour that is as harrowing and intense as any that has ever been captured on screen. (Paramount Home Entertainment, $29.99 DVD, $39.99 Blu-ray)

"Here Comes the Boom" - Kevin James plays a high school biology teacher who transforms himself into a mixed martial arts fighter to raise money for his school's music program, which is about to be cut due to financial problems. And since Salma Hayek plays his potential love interest, James as a MMA champion isn't the most far-fetched thing here.

The DVD includes 18 deleted scenes, a gag reel and the featurette "Here Comes the Cast." Blu-ray buyers get an additional five featurettes. (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, $30.99 DVD, $35.99 Blu-ray)

"Alex Cross" - Tyler Perry tries to expand his audience, taking on the role of the FBI profiler / psychologist / crime solver from James Patterson's best-selling novels. But there's a point where audiences may wish they were watching "Tyler Perry's Madea Solves a Murder" instead. It couldn't have been any worse. Perry is badly miscast, and the only appeal the movie might hold for local audiences is checking out some of the northeast Ohio locations (Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens in Akron, XO Prime Steak in Cleveland) that stand in for Detroit in the movie.

The disc includes deleted scenes, a commentary track by director Rob Cohen and the featurette "The Psychologist and the Butcher: Adapting and Filming Alex Cross." (Lionsgate Home Entertainment, $29.95 DVD, $39.99 Blu-ray)

"Celeste and Jesse Forever" - Rashida Jones and Andy Samberg star as a couple that married young and now find themselves on different paths as they approach 30. Jones (who co-wrote the screenplay) believes they should get divorced before their marriage ruins their friendship, and the transition from couple to friends has unexpected consequences.

Jones and Samberg team for one commentary track, and Jones joins co-writer Will McCormack and director Lee Toland Krieger for a second track. The disc also includes deleted scenes, footage from the red-carpet premiere and a making-of featurette. (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, $30.99 DVD, $35.99 Blu-ray)

"A Late Quartet" - Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener, Christopher Walken and Mark Ivanir play musicians in a respected string quartet. When they learn that one of the members (Walken) may be retiring, it triggers ego clashes and other problems within the group. (20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, $22.98 DVD, $29.98 Blu-ray)

"The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure" - This attempt to launch a new toddler entertainment phenomenon instead will be remembered as one of the biggest box office bombs of all time, earning less than a half-million dollars its opening weekend in spite of opening on 2,160 screens. The brightly colored Oogieloves may fare better on home video. The film is available on demand and as a digital download as well as a DVD available exclusively through Walmart.

DVD extras include character biographies and the "Know Your Oogielove" interactive game. (Lionsgate Home Entertainment, $19.98 DVD)

"Deadfall" - Eric Bana and Olivia Wilde play a brother-and-sister crime duo who are on the run and end up at a farmhouse. Sissy Spacek, Kris Kristofferson, Charlie Hunnam and Kate Mara costar. (Magnolia Home Entertainment, $26.98 DVD, $29.98 Blu-ray)

"Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel" - This documentary focuses on the life and career of the fashion icon and magazine editor. (Entertainment One, $24.98 DVD)

"Side by Side" - Keanu Reeves talks to such directors as James Cameron, David Fincher, Christopher Nolan and Martin Scorsese about what is gained and what is lost by the move away from celluloid and toward digital filmmaking. (New Video Group, $26.95 DVD, $29.95 Blu-ray)
