HUBBARD - A local superintendent is donating his salary to the school district.
Richard J. Buchenic, Hubbard schools superintendent, will be paid $1 to serve from Aug. 1 through July 31, 2014. The majority of Buchenic's $85,000 salary will be put toward completion of campus renovations.
"I'm a Hubbard graduate, and this is just a way that I feel that I can give back to the community," he said.
The money will be used to defray renovation costs, including the baseball field, softball field, track resurfacing, a band shelter and turf for the stadium and possibly some storage buildings and additional restrooms at the track complex.
The board approved the contract at Monday's meeting.
Buchenic said he has not received a pay raise for nine years, but it is his intention to save the district money and pay back the Hubbard community.
"I learned from my mother that there are certain things you do to make it in life, and education has been good to me," he said, calling his contribution a small one.
Buchenic said he will serve the district for 260 days at the salary of $1.
