There are two Ohio State University students who get it.
The two are from the Youngstown area and they see the potential of the shale play in the area. They operate an organization called the Buckeye Shale Energy Organization in anticipation of the job opportunities coming as the Utica and Marcellus shale developments unfold.
The network was founded by Vince Melillo, president of the BSEO, and Alex Sava, treasurer.
BSEO is comprised of students in engineering and geology under the leadership of Dr. Jeff Daniels of OSU's School of Earth Sciences. The idea is to educate students on the opportunities shale development offers and to connect students with employers.
Sava recently was quoted in a story saying, "I'm not a political analyst nor an economist, but I believe that this shale is one of the most encouraging developments to hit the Youngstown area since the steel industry of the past. While other students getting ready to graduate from college might be worried about their prospects, the Utica Shale has made students in my field confident about their future."
Can't argue with that.
As the shale developments continue in the area, many people eagerly are awaiting what will be found deep underground in the area.
Just ask Glenn Brugler and his neighbors. It is on his property where the first horizontal fracturing, or fracking, well is being drilled. The property is near Hayes Orangeville road. He said he was ''cautiously optimistic'' and ''Like anybody, we are waiting to see.''
There are a lot of people ''waiting to see.'' Shale development has been talked about now for quite a while. Finally, drilling is taking place.
And so far, according to a recent U.S. Chamber of Commerce study, 38,000 jobs have been created by the industry. I am sure there will be many more to come.
And for kids like Sava and Melillo, the future looks bright. They - and many others - probably can find a job and not have to move away as part of the so-called ''brain drain.'' And that benefits everyone in the area.
