HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Ida Lula Elmore-Davis, 89, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, in Tampa, Fla.
She was born Aug. 1, 1923, in Newton Falls, the daughter of the late Daniel and Bertha Elmore. She was the eldest daughter in a family of 10 children.
She moved to New York City, where she later met and married Arthur L. Davis. From this union were born two children, Arida and Lloyd Davis.

Ida and Arthur remained married until his passing in 1997. They resided in Hempstead, N.Y.
After graduating high school, Ida attended Wilberforce University, where she received her bachelor's degree in education. She also received a master's degree from Columbia University in teaching.
She was one of the only black teachers in the East Meadow, Long Island, School District, where she taught business at the high school. She retired after 27 years of service.
Ida was a world traveler and loved to send out postcards from the many places she visited. Hawaii was her favorite destination. Her love for adventure on the high seas took her on the Tom Joyner cruise earlier last year with her beloved sister Bertha Elmore Newbern. She loved spending Christmas with the Thomas family in Anniston, Ala.
Ida loved the Lord and was very active member at Union Baptist Church in Hempstead. She loved to plant flowers around the church grounds in the spring. She also was a very active member in the community, belonging to the NAACP and various organizations in her lifetime. She was a golden member of the local AKA chapter, serving more than 60 years.
Ida was on vacation in Tampa, Fla., when the Lord called her home. She loved the Florida sunshine in the month of January. Being the matriarch of the Elmore family, she will be dearly missed.
Her memory will always be cherished by her brother, Robert Elmore of Detroit, and her sister, Bertha Elmore Newbern of Clermont, Fla.; her children, Arida Davis Wright of Key West, Fla., and Lloyd Davis of Hempstead; grandchildren Jayla, Jarius and Justin; more than 25 nieces and nephews, including Robert, Diane, Carla, Jerome, Sherry, Marion, Kim, Stephen, Ricky, David, Valerie, Tony, Beverly, Bernard, Kathy, Leslie, Joni, Artie, Bernie, Tishi, Lester, Leisha, Jeffrey, Winnie and Joyce Ann; and a host of relatives and friends.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers and five sisters.
Calling hours will be at First Baptist Church of Braceville from 11 a.m. to noon today. Funeral services will immediately follow at noon with the Rev. Calvin Mason and the Rev. Joshua Moore officiating.
Ida will be laid to rest beside her husband, Arthur, in Braceville Cemetery.
