Helen B. McCoy, 1920-2013

NILES - Helen B. McCoy, 92, died at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at her daughter's home where she resided.

She was born Sept. 19, 1920, in Niles, the daughter of Guy and Minnie Roberts Smurro.

Helen was a 1938 graduate of Niles McKinley High School where she was a member of the marching band and a graduate of Business College in Youngstown.

She was employed at the Corps of Engineers in Washington, D.C., and Youngstown and the Lordstown Ordnace and Military Reservation in the mail and records department and worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Westfall's office in Niles.

She was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Niles, the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Society, and Niles SCOPE, where she enthusiastically participated in the annual variety show.

She enjoyed playing cards, crossword puzzles, reading, and visiting and celebrating holidays with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Prior to his death on Dec. 24, 2003, she enjoyed many years of travel with her husband, James J. McCoy Jr., whom she married May 5, 1945.

Helen will be deeply missed by a son, Dr. James J. (Ruth) McCoy III of Chicago; a daughter, Cindy Hlas of Howland, with whom she made her home; four grandchildren, Alexis (David) Forsythe, Bridget (Brendan) Lewis, Jennifer (Bob) Guido and Christopher Hlas; four great grandchildren, Patrick and Brendan Forsythe, and Boden and Pace Hlas Guido; and a nephew, Anthony (Barbara) Nardo.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Julia Nardo, Clara Smurro and Irene Smurro, and a son-in-law, David Hlas.

Friends may call 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Joseph Rossi and Sons Funeral Home in Niles where Our Lady of Mount Carmel Society will conduct prayers at 2:45 p.m. and Mount Carmel Bereavement Ministry at 4:30 p.m. Friends may also call from 9:15 to 9:45 p.m. Monday at Joseph Rossi and Sons Funeral Home in Niles.

Due to the renovation of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Helen's Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Monday at the Joseph Rossi and Sons Funeral Home in Niles with the Rev. John-Michael Lavelle officiating. Burial will be in Pineview Cemetery.
