Police: Man shot on
East Side of Youngstown
YOUNGSTOWN - Police say a man was shot by someone in a passing car about 6:30 p.m. Friday on an East Side street.
A police spokesman said the 59-year-old man, who police did not identify, was walking down Shehy Street when he was shot in the arm and side.
The man then walked into a store and told the employees he had been shot. They then called 911, the spokesman said.
The victim was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center. Police searched the area but could find no sign of the car, the spokesman said.
Report: Fire destroys
South Side home
YOUNGSTOWN - Firefighters tried briefly to fight a blaze at a vacant 81 E. Delason Ave. home early Friday morning but instead had to let it burn.
Crews were called by Street Department workers for a fire at the home about 1:50 a.m. and found flames on the second floor. Firefighters got inside and tried to fight the fire from there but were pulled out when the fire rapidly spread and flames shot through the roof, reports state.
Crews then protected neighboring homes, reports state. Damage is listed at $5,000. The home was a total loss. No one was injured.
OVI checkpoint set
for Mahoning County
CANFIELD - The Mahoning County Operating A Vehicle While Under The Influence Task Force is running a checkpoint sometime today.
The task force said more details will be released later today as to where it will be and what time it will be in operation.
There also will be saturation patrols in the area of the checkpoint to catch any impaired drivers who may try to elude the checkpoint.
