Horrors don’t change meaning of the season

December 23, 2012
By PATTY KIMERER , Tribune Chronicle | TribToday.com

Well, friends, here we are. Two days before Christmas and, given the recent events at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., it's going to be a challenge to stay jolly this year.

But, as has become customary for my little space in the world, this particular column is expressly designated for " 'Twas the Night before Christmas"-isms. Here's the PK take on the Clement Moore classic for Christmas 2012.

'Twas a while before Christmas

When all through the nation

TV sets, tablets, laptops

And computers were blazin'

With horrific news

And horrendous sights

That left each of us in

Much despair day and night.

For, although we have witnessed

Such evils before

This story caused outrage,

Devastation - and more.

Because no human being

With a pulse and a soul

Could witness this dread

And walk away whole.

Yet although we're distraught

And through all of our tears

There's a shimmer of hope

That quells some of our fears.

For it's easy to forget

What this season's about

Or give into the sadness,

And outrage and doubt.

But the truth is this year

Probably more than most others

We must all come together

As sisters and brothers.

And turn to our God

With a deep, trusting faith

Recalling the treasure

Of the promise He made.

To send us his Son,

Though we just don't deserve it!

So to save us from sin

For He feels we are worth it.

Lo, as hard as it is

To dig deep and find joy;

Take heart, just reflect

On that little baby boy.

The one born outside

In a small meager manger

Who now holds in His keep

26 souls safe from danger.

So, this season remember

To hold your family tight

And give thanks for the wonder

Of pure Christmas light.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays. God bless!
