Girard woman wins patrol award
SOUTHINGTON - Ohio State Highway Patrol dispatcher Amy M. Zatvarnicky has been selected as the Warren District Dispatcher of the Year and is now in contention for the State Dispatcher of the Year award.
The selection of Zatvarnicky, 39, of Girard, is in recognition of outstanding service during 2012 at the Warren Dispatch Center, according to a release from the patrol. Post management, troopers and dispatchers chose Zatvarnicky based on job knowledge and ability, enthusiastic work attitude, teamwork and prompt and courteous response to the public, the patrol states.
Zatvarnicky joined the Highway Patrol in 1998 and has served at the Canfield Post along with the Ravenna and Warren Dispatch Centers. She is originally from Austintown and a graduate of Austintown Fitch High School.
She and husband, David, live in Girard with their two daughters.
Four gunman rob man in his own driveway
YOUNGSTOWN - Four armed men stole a wallet from a man unloading groceries about 6:25 p.m. Monday at his South Side home, police said.
Donald Keck, 60, said he was coming out of his enclosed back porch when the four men converged in opposite directions, each one holding a gun. One of the men took his wallet and hit him in the head with a gun, the police report states.
Keck was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center Boardman Campus to be treated for his injuries.
Deputy finds 2 knives on man in bar ruckus
CHAMPION - A Trumbull County sheriff's deputy reported finding two knives on a man at a Mahoning Avenue bar Monday.
The man, Maurice Surgener, 46, 5379 Sabrina Lane, was arraigned Tuesday in Warren Municipal Court on three counts of aggravated menacing and a single count of endangering, all misdemeanors. He pleaded not guilty and surety bond was set at $5,000. He has a preliminary hearing Feb. 1.
Deputies were called to back up township police on a report of a man tearing up the bar and pulling a knife on several patrons, according to a sheriff's report. Deputies said they found Surgener by a kitchen door and that he admitted being the person other patrons were complaining about.
Surgener reached in his pocket when he was asked if he had a knife, and he was told to put his hands up, the report states. One of the deputies searched him and found the two knives, the report states.
Shots through window wound man on couch
YOUNGSTOWN - A Katherine Street man was shot twice while he was visiting a 31 Rutledge Drive home on the East Side early Monday evening.
Police called for gunfire at the home about 6:25 p.m. found 25-year-old Justin Johnson bleeding from wounds to the leg and torso after someone fired through a living room window.
The homeowner said she was sitting on the couch with Johnson and her 2-year-old daughter just before someone in the front yard fired several shots from a .38-caliber revolver.
The girl was walking away from the couch when the shots were fired and was not harmed, police said.
Johnson was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center for treatment, police said.
