CORTLAND - Karen Lee Horrell, 67, died Sunday evening, Dec. 9, 2012, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren.
She was born Aug. 6, 1945, in Rimersburg, Pa., the daughter of the late Marion Rosalie Wilkison Walter and Wayne Wallace Walter.
Karen was raised in the New Castle, Pa., area, graduating from New Castle High School in 1963. She attended Pennsylvania State University on a General Motors scholarship before graduating with a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics. She worked as a computer programmer for Sun Oil Co. in Philadelphia, prior to her marriage and their move to Warren. She there took a job as a computer programmer for Republic Steel Corporation, a position she held until she left the paid work force to start a family. After that, she took pride in her volunteer work for the Champion Presbyterian Church, the Lake to River Girl Scout Council, Tampeel, Kent State University SummerStock and Ballet Western Reserve.

Karen also enjoyed the theatre, acting, stage managing and directing at Kent State University, Trumbull New Theatre, the Backdoor Theater and for the Packard Music Hall Foundation.
She was an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Warren for many years.
Karen is survived by her husband of more than 45 years, Ted, whom she married Jan. 9, 1967; her two sons, Thomas "Tom" (Margarita Fernandez) Horrell and their son, Tylor, and by Todd Horrell, all of Warren; and a daughter, Barbara Allen of Cortland. She and Ted were guardians for two grandchildren, Le'Asia and Le'Allen. Also, Karen is survived by her brother, Wayne Carleton Walter of New Castle, Pa., and her sister, Gale Tucker of Florence, Ore.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Lane Family Funeral Homes, Shafer-Winans Chapel, 164 N. High St., Cortland, OH 44410.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross for the Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund.
