DEAR EDITOR:
The November presidential election is finally over. All of the countless commercials bashing each other have subsided. Yet, there is another issue that dominates the news these days: the awful killing of our children.
It breaks my heart every time I hear it or see it on the news. Two little boys were minding their own business, playing on their grandmother's porch, and then were hit by a drunken driver. One boy died and the other was flown to a hospital. A mother in Cleveland killed her young son, put him in a garbage bag and discarded him as if he were trash.
What is going on? To me, being a parent is the most important, most honorable job that God can bestow upon us. It baffles my mind that a "mother," who gave birth to her baby and looked into his eyes for the first time, could some months or years later look into those same eyes as she tortures and kills her child. Again I say, what is going on?
Christmas time is upon us once again. People are scurrying to and fro buying gifts, trimming the tree, baking and making plans for this festive season. Dreams of that jolly old elf (Santa) are dominating children's minds. Christmas music is everywhere. Good will is preached and practiced by some at this season and forgotten about the rest of the year.
I wonder to myself, do people realize whose birthday we celebrate at Christmas? He was but a humble child, so meek and mild, like these children I mentioned before. People tried to kill Him when He was but a child and failed. Later on in His adult life, they followed through with His torture, with His death. Christ died for us, yet Christmas is so commercial that He is hardly associated with the holiday.
This is very sad to me. Nativity scenes are banned in some places; some Christmas songs cannot be sung in some schools. Jesus Christ cannot compete with Santa Claus in this day and age.
I think that will all of the needless murders of our children, all of the needless bloodshed of war here and abroad, we need to acknowledge Jesus Christ, especially at this time of year. He is the perfect gift given to us by our Father God. Whose birthday is it anyway?
