Police still looking for suspect in robbery
NILES - Police said they may have to look outside the immediate area to identify the person who robbed a local cash advance business on Tuesday.
Niles police Chief Robert J. Hinton said that detectives have been following leads, but nothing concrete.
"We just hope someone will recognize him from the picture," he said.
According to reports, a man entered the National Cash Advance on Youngstown Warren Road, walked up to a counter and said he wanted a money order. Then he declared, "This is a robbery.''
A 911 call from the business was placed at 10:53 a.m.
It is not known whether the man was armed. An undisclosed amount of cash was taken from the registers, police said.
No injuries were reported.
Cause sought for fire on Burton Street
WARREN - Investigators are trying to figure out how a fire started that caused $16,000 in damage to a 2335 Burton St. S.E. home about 1:05 a.m. Friday.
Fire Chief Ken Nussle said one person inside the home, the tenant's son, escaped the blaze before firefighters arrived.
The blaze started on the first floor, Nussle said.
A firefighter injured his shoulder but was treated at the scene and did not miss any time, Nussle said.
Burkey Road home damaged by blaze
AUSTINTOWN - A fire at a Burkey Road home about 1:18 a.m. caused about $35,000 in damages.
Fire Chief Andrew Frost Jr. said crews were called to the home about 1:20 a.m. and found the right rear corner of the home ablaze as well as some fire on the outside.
Crews were told a person was in the house, but a search revealed no one was inside. The person who lives there was outside when firefighters arrived.
Frost said investigators are still trying determine a cause.
Woman reports being stabbed in hand by son
WARREN - A 14-year-old male was taken to the Juvenile Justice Center on Thursday after his mother said he stabbed her in the hand with a fork.
According to reports, the woman, who lives on Freeman Street N.W., told city police that when she went to "smack him in the face" her son struck her with the fork, injuring her right hand.
The boy told police that the fork was above his head, but came down as he was being smacked several times in the face and hit the woman's hand.
Police said they planned to file unruly child and felonious assault charges against the boy.
Help Hotline Crisis Center gets $7,000 grant
The Help Hotline Crisis Center has been awarded a $7,000 grant from the CareSource Foundation.
The grant funding is to provide for outreach and referral to homeless adults and connect them to service and treatment providers.
Help Hotline operates the Projects for Assistance in Transition from Homelessness (P.A.T.H.) program in Mahoning and Trumbull counties.
