Fri. 11:23am: Woman wanted for Pa. shelter scam jailed in Ohio

December 7, 2012
Tribune Chronicle | TribToday.com

PITTSBURGH (AP) - A woman wanted on charges she pretended to be the abused wife of a Pittsburgh police officer so she could live at a battered women's shelter is now facing charges and jailed in Ohio for allegedly doing the same thing there - except this time she claimed her abuser was a Columbus cop.

In both cases, authorities contend, the officers didn't exist and the abuse never happened - but shelter officials in both states learned that only after 33-year-old Amy Slanina spent weeks getting free food and shelter.

Slanina has yet to stand trial for the charges stemming from her stay at the western Pennsylvania shelter last year because she never showed up for trial.

But now police in Ashland have charged her there for the same thing - and she remains in jail.
