Local Pearl Harbor ceremonies planned
WARREN - A Pearl Harbor Remembrance will be held at 10 a.m. today at the First Presbyterian Church of Warren, 256 Mahoning Ave., Warren. The service will honor those who served in the military during the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor.
Cari Delgado, a Navy veteran with the veterans service office, said the event will include guest speakers, displays and program by the Trumbull County Honor Guard. It is sponsored by the Trumbull County Veterans Service Commission.
In Youngstown, the 71st annual Pearl Harbor Remembrance will take place at 10:30 a.m. Sunday during the morning Mass at St. Stanislaus Church, 430 Williamson Ave., Youngstown. Veterans posts will assemble at 10 a.m. in the church hall.
On Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese forces made a surprise attack on the U.S. Naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The next day, the United States declared war on Japan, resulting in the United States entering World War II.
Police:?Warren man beaten by three others
WARREN - An Iddings Avenue S.E. man said he was beaten by three other men late Wednesday night as he was walking on East Market Street near Iddings Avenue.
Joshua Kroesen, 23, told police from Trumbull Memorial Hospital he was with a group of friends when the three men jumped, and they hit him several times with a broken bottle.
Reports state he had several cuts and was bleeding heavily when officers were called to the hospital to take his statement.
Former funeral director pleads not guilty
ASHTABULA - A 59-year-old former Vienna funeral director pleaded not guilty Thursday to criminal mischief in connection with a domestic quarrel with his fourth wife and her daughter Nov. 26.
Robert Girts remains free on a personal recognizance bond set in Ashtabula County Court, where he is scheduled for a pre-trial Jan. 24.
His wife, Ruth Girts, said she fears her husband, a Poland native whose murder convictions were twice overturned in the death of his third wife, who was poisoned 20 years ago.
Prosecutors in Cuyahoga County are preparing to retry Girts for a third time on the murder and have asked a judge there to revoke his $100,000 bond based on the claims of the fourth wife. A hearing on that issue is scheduled for Wednesday.
Police: Man buying drugs beaten at diner
WARREN - A man found bloodied and bruised just after 11 p.m. Wednesday on East Market Street told police he was buying drugs in the bathroom of a South Street restaurant when he was beaten.
Anthony J. DiCristofaro, 31, of Battle Creek, Mich., told police he was attacked by a man he knows in the bathroom of the Taco Bell on South Street S.E. DiCristofaro told officers he was a heroin addict, and he had a needle on him, which police found, the police report states. Police went to Taco Bell and found a loaded syringe on the floor of the bathroom, reports state.
DiCristofaro had several cuts, lost a tooth and was bleeding heavily from the mouth, reports state. He was being treated at Trumbull Memorial Hospital with a police hold for misdemeanor counts of possessing drug abuse instruments.
