HOWLAND - A group of Howland High School students have found a creative way to not only score a good grade in their English class, but to also help a family devastated from Hurricane Sandy.
Kayla Axiotis, Kalliopi Georgalos and Aubrey Elder decided to help the Spriggs family from New York. The students have been selling various ornaments at $5 each, with all proceeds to help the family.
Axiotis said a tree lighting ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the Howland Community gazebo with the public encouraged to bring ornaments they purchased to decorate the tree.
The event will include music and refreshments. The Mocha House will be providing hot chocolate and cookies.
''We want the whole community to come and show their support for this worthwhile event,'' Georgalos said.
Elder said the support and kindness shown has been amazing.
Ornaments can be purchased at the Mocha House, 467 High St. N.E., Warren, with donations also being accepted.
