HOWLAND - A local Cub Scout pack which has members who will be moving into Boy Scouts is looking to form a new troop.
Bob Sincich, cub master for Pack 122, said a long time ago, there was a Boy Scout troop that met at Howland United Methodist Church, where today only a Cub Scout pack meets.
He said the troop ended in 1979 and was replaced by Pack 122, which came into existence around 1980.
"This pack has been very strong over the years. In the last three to four years, we have averaged 70 to 90 boys from Howland and Vienna," Sincich said.
He said a lot of parents have stepped up to provide strong leadership to the program.
Sincich said most of the pack's boys are in fifth and sixth grade and will be leaving Cub Scouts. Cubs are for ages 6 to 11 and Boy Scouts for ages 11 to 18.
"The boys decided and we as leaders have talked about starting our own Boy Scout troop. The boys thought it would be good and wanted to be part of starting a new tradition with a new Boy Scout troop," Sincich said.
Sincich said the Howland United Methodist Church also liked the idea and sees it as an outreach ministry.
And "it would be best to have them stay together instead of being split apart into other troops,'' he said.
Plans are for the troop to be established for April 2013 and meet Mondays at the church.
"We want to be tied to the community and do community-related events and activities,'' he said.
Rob White, a scout leader, said the scouts and leaders are excited and view the new troop as an opportunity for the scouts to stay together and grow.
