Police budget on Falls agenda

NEWTON FALLS - Council members are holding another special meeting at 4:30 p.m. today at City Hall on Canal Street to discuss the 2013 budget, particularly pertaining to the city's police department.

With the failed 3-mill additional levy earlier this month that would have raised an additional $200,000 per year, plus state funding cuts, the department is looking for ways to compensate, officials said. Their proposed budget, which will be reviewed at the meeting, requests more than $943,000. Through Sept. 30 of this year, the department has spent a little more than $845,000.

Tracy L. Reimbold, finance director, said the leasing of several new police cruisers will be discussed.

State grants to pave 3 roads

The Ohio Public Works Commission grant money will be added to about $440,000 from the engineer's office to redo all of or portions of Educational Highway, Larchmont Avenue and North River Road.

''The plan is to have the work completed by August,'' said Don Barzak, office director of governmental affairs / grants and special projects coordinator.

Education Highway will be improved from state Route 45 to the Trumbull Career and Technical Center; Larchmont Avenue from Perkins Jones Road to Dietz Road; and North River Road from North Road to state Route 46.

The man took the victim's wallet, watch and $30 before making him drive to Laird Avenue and South Street S.E., where the victim was ordered out of the car.
