CORTLAND - The Trumbull County Metro-parks Board of Commissioners voted to become the lead agency for the Mosquito Lake Greenway Project.

Mike Wilson, chairman of the board, said ''The Mosquito Lake Greenway project will be a great addition to our park system.''

The Trumbull County Metropark Park system currently consists of seven parks and 10 properties in various stages of development, a total area of more than 2,000 acres over 11 of Trumbull County's 35 political subdivisions.

Zachary Svette, director of operations for Trumbull Metroparks said, "I'll be meeting with the Mosquito Lake Greenway Project in the near future to help them with their short- and long-term goals."

The Mosquito Lake Greenway Project plans to connect with the Western Reserve Greenway, which is part of the Great Ohio Lake to River Greenway, and encircle the southern portion of Mosquito Lake with bike lanes.

Svette said the Great Ohio Lake to River Greenway is approximately 80 percent complete, and when finished, will connect Lake Erie in Ashtabula county to the Ohio River in Columbiana County, a distance of approximately 110 miles.

"Our central location on the Great Ohio and the growth of cycling for recreation and sustainable transportation make Trumbull County and Mosquito Lake the ideal location for a bicycle-friendly destination," said Michael Swiatkwich, founder and chair of the Mosquito Lake Greenway Project

"By giving visitors more to do, they'll stay longer. If they stay longer they'll spend more money," he said.
