MCDONALD - John Jay Merwin, 71, passed away Monday morning, Nov. 12, 2012, at his home.
John was born July 21, 1941, in Zanesville, the son of the late Byron W. and Hazel Louise Cranford Merwin Sr.
A veteran of the United States Navy, John served on the USS Saratoga out of Mayport, Fla.

John was a block operator for the Pennsylvania Railroad, Conrail and then Norfolk Southern for 34 years, retiring Jan. 1, 2007. He had a deep love of trains and was a member of the Youngstown Model Railroad Club.
He was of the Methodist Faith.
He will be sadly missed by his wife, the former Shirley Laverne White, whom he married Feb. 4, 1966; a daughter, Sheila A. (Joseph) Baker of Warren; a son, David W. Merwin of Michigan; a sister, Sally Lou Merwin of Youngs-town; a brother, Byron W. Merwin Jr. of Florida; two grandchildren, Joseph D. Merwin and Stanley R. Merwin; and a great-granddaughter, Kiersten A. Merwin.
Besides his parents, John was preceded in death by a sister, Lois Ann Moore.
Friends may call from 4 to 5 p.m. Friday at the Lane Family Funeral Home, Mineral Ridge Chapel, where a funeral service will be held at 5 p.m.
