Now that the mad dash to the polls is over, we can all take a breath and relish the absence of the barrage of political ads and Facebook assaults from our passionate (opinionated) friends.
On Tuesday, I was questioned by friends and family regarding my choice for president.
I forgot. Never discuss politics or religion, even (or especially) with close friends and family.
This lesson is one I've learned after some interesting debates regarding religion; it amuses me that even religious orders that worship the same god can find so many things to argue about.
This gave me an idea: Why argue about politics and religion when there are so many more things we can be disagreeing over?
Pepsi vs. Coke - My husband is a Pepsi guy, but Coke is the obvious choice because it tastes better. Pepsi is just way too sweet.
Chocolate vs. vanilla - I used to pick vanilla, but as I've gotten older, the chocolate cravings have become insatiable. I now understand why people used to look at me funny when I picked bland over fantastic.
Milk vs. dark chocolate - Another instance where my taste buds evolved, dark chocolate is the winner. It is healthier, as it helps lower blood pressure and is an antioxidant. It is also yummier.
Mac vs. PC - This quite heated debate has gotten numerous friends and family members all fired up. Honestly, it doesn't make sense to compare the two. Only one of them really qualifies as a computer.
The Fab Four - If you don't know I'm talking about John, Paul, George and Ringo then you should just skip to the next item. We all know John and Paul were the songwriters, and as such were the top two Beatles. But the No. 1 spot goes to John Lennon. He tried to end war. He wrote "Imagine." Enough said.
Men vs. women drivers - This is a silly topic, because everyone knows women are better drivers than men. Why this debate has persisted over the years is a mystery.
Cats vs. dogs - I love all animals, but cats are obviously more sophisticated than dogs. Dogs are pack animals. Cats are independent and manipulative. But why we compare two different species makes no sense; it's like comparing apples and oranges.
Apples vs. oranges - They are both a type of fruit. They both grow on trees. They are round. They shed seeds. I'm calling this one a draw.
Since there are so many things to argue about besides bipartisan politics, I think we should change it up a little. Instead of red vs. blue, why don't we just mix it together and make all the parties purple?
While we're at it, we should just agree that everyone has a right to worship (or not worship) a god or gods of their choice; that it doesn't really matter if Coke tastes better than Pepsi or vice-versa; that some people like vanilla over chocolate and that's OK; and finally, that some people prefer Macs to PCs and that's OK, too. (Some people like to waste money.)
