General Motors Co. will not build its next-generation Chevrolet Cruze in South Korea, Reuters is reporting.
According to the news service, a GM Korea spokesman confirmed the revamped Cruze will not be built in South Korea, but did not provide further details. The Cruze accounts for 50 to 60 percent of about 260,000 vehicles produced at GM's Korea plant.
The news raises the possibility that the car company might relocate Cruze assembly to Europe to boost efficiency at its money-losing unit there.
The next-generation Cruze, due in fall 2014 as a 2015 model, will be the first vehicle to use a GM global platform that could underpin 2.5 million compact sedans and crossovers by 2018, Reuters previously has reported.
GM's North American Cruze is built in Lordstown. In addition, Cruzes also are built in China and Brazil.
