Niles church welcomes new pastor

Bishop George Murry of the Diocese of Youngstown took part in the recnet installation of the Rev. John-Michael Lavelle who was appointed last summer as pastor of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish.

Lavelle, ordained May 27, 2000, completed seminary studies at St. Vincent Seminary in Latrobe, Pa.

He served as associate pastor at St. Mary Parish in Massillon and St. Christine Parish in Youngstown.

Lavelle served as pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish in Ravenna, and director of advancement for the Diocesan Office of Catholic Charities, a position he will keep in addition to his new assignment.

Lavelle is chairperson of the Diocesan Catechetical Commission, secretary of the Diocese of Youngstown Foundation, and a member of the Diocesan Stewardship Commission.

He previously served as pastoral director of Catholic Television Network of Youngstown, and instructor in the Theology Department at Walsh University and in the Deacon Formation Program for the diocese.

He also served as chaplain of the Serra Club of Youngstown, which promotes vocations to the priesthood.
