Ross, Mosley good combo for McDonald

April 5, 2012
By JOHN VARGO , Tribune Chronicle | jvargo@TribToday.com

McDonald may have lost the state's best Division III thrower in Matthias Tayala, who is competing for Kent State University.

Tayala is an integral part of the Golden Flashes' track and field team, as well as former state championship thrower Joh'vonnie Mosley - one of the best female throwers in school history.

Now, there are two more throwers coming up through the McDonald ranks - both on the girls side.

McDonald sophomores Tory Ross and Jai'lyn Mosley have been a steady 1-2 in both the shot put and discus events this season.

Both girls advanced to the Division III Navarre Regional last season.

Right now, Mosley and Ross seem like a good tandem the Blue Devils will have the next couple of years.

BOARDMAN GOING THE DISTANCE: The Boardman High School boys track and field team set a new school record in the sprint medley relay on Friday at Dover High School.

The team of sophomore Ivan Adu-Poku, sophomore Turel Thompson, senior Darel Green and senior Dayne Hammond's time of 1 minute, 37.2 seconds broke a 1991 record held by Sean Banks, Dan Spires, Martin Lesniak and Ted Huziak of 1:37.6.

OUT OF ACTION: John F. Kennedy sophomore Carl Zallow is in rehab after pulling his hamstring at the Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches state indoor track and field meet in Akron.

Zallow injured himself in the 60-meter dash finals.

He is slated to return in a few weeks.

LEAPING INDIANS: Girard's Jamal McClendon has glided through the 110-meter hurdles this season, averaging about 15 seconds per outing.

Combine that with Jabril Brown inching closer to the 20-foot mark in the long jump, it makes it a good combination for the Indians.

Considering Brown was a good shot blocker for Girard during basketball season, it's no wonder his skills transfer to the long jump launching pad.

UP NEXT: Today, the Lakeview Relays, F.E. Cope (boys) Invitational at Reilly Stadium in Salem and Champion Invitational are running.

Newton Falls, Niles, McDonald, Girard, Jefferson and Lakeview are some of the teams at the Lakeview Relays.

Austintown Fitch, Howland, LaBrae and Warren G. Harding are some of the teams in Salem, while Lordstown, Cardinal, Ledgemont, St. Peter Chanel, Streetsboro, Garfield, Edgewood, Conneaut and Champion are in the Champion Invitational.

Saturday is a light slate as the Chardon Hilltopper Invitational and the East Palestine Girls Invitational are running that morning.

Austintown Fitch, Howland, Harding and Badger are some of the local teams scheduled to run at East Palestine.
