Gas prices rocket to another record

Tribune Chronicle
POSTED: May 15, 2008

Northeast Ohio gasoline prices continued their record-setting course for the fourth straight week, rising more than 20 cents per gallon to $3.75 for self-serve regular, according to AAA Fuel Gauge.

With the Memorial Day holiday weekend approaching, the national average was $3.73 as of Tuesday. The average price a year ago was $3.16.

Gasoline reached $4.20 a gallon in Akron; Niles was the cheapest in the region at nearly $3.70, although some area stations listed it at $3.80. The BP station on Elm Road was selling gas for $3.86 per gallon Wednesday night.

The cost of a barrel of oil surged to a record of $126.98 before easing. Gasoline prices will continue to rise as Memorial Day — the traditional start to the summer driving season — nears, AAA said.

Future prices will depend on demand from travelers, AAA noted. Lackluster demand could keep a lid on prices, while the more traditional surge in consumption could send prices toward another record.

The administration needs to lower the speed limits the way Nixon did. There is no need for 75 mph limits. Lower it to 62Mph(100kph). We will not only save fuel but also save lives. 62 mph on the interstate hwys and 55 mph on state hwys will greatly reduce fuel consumption.
