‘‘I’m thinking to myself, ‘Train whistle, cop car, train whistle, cop car.’ And then I heard it,’’ he said, banging his palm on his porch deck to mimic the sound of the train crashing into the Newton Township police cruiser Monday night.
Boyd dressed quickly while his wife, who was painting the living room, panicked. She said she saw someone near the cruiser before the crash. Boyd ran to the cruiser, and was joined by another officer. He half-expected to find someone inside.
The cop car was unoccupied. Patrolman Tom Colosimo had jumped out of the cruiser to chase a suspect in a string of copper thefts.
On Tuesday, Newton Falls Police were reviewing dispatch tapes to learn whether the train for CSX railroad had enough warning to stop. Colosimo radioed Newton Falls dispatch to call CSX and have all traffic along the railroad stopped because he was involved in a foot chase along the tracks.
According to reports from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the a dispatcher in Newton Falls was on the phone with the CSX company 15 minutes later when the train hit the cruiser, which was partially parked on the tracks with its overhead lights on.
The cruiser now sits in Layfield Towing lot in Newton Falls, crushed in the middle, with wires dangling from the windows.
According to a news release from the township, Colosimo stopped his car on the tracks to chase three people who were walking along the rails at about 10:45 p.m.
Large amounts of copper wiring were stolen from along the train tracks recently, which prompted Colosimo to chase after the three people he saw along the tracks. He called for backup and was joined by officers from Newton Falls, Braceville Township, Trumbull County sheriff’s deputies, Lordstown Village Police and a police dog from Newton Falls, according to the township.
The train hit the cruiser at 11 p.m., according to the Highway Patrol. CSX track inspector and city Mayor Pat Layshock said the crash was a low impact considering that trains usually travel about 50 mph through there.
A train can brake for up to two miles before stopping. The train knocked the cruiser off the tracks and continued on for about 14 car lengths, Layshock said.
‘‘It was a mistake in judgment where he decided to stop the cruiser,’’ Layshock said. ‘‘But he should be commended for his effort in trying to stop the vandalism (along the tracks).’’
Boyd, who lives next to the tracks, said the train seemed to be going slower than usual.
There is space the cruiser could have pulled off to the side, he said.
‘‘There’s no way in h—- a guy should ever, ever park on the tracks,’’ Boyd said.
No arrests were made Monday, according to police.
Township police spokesman Jim Luonuansuu said officers recovered a piece of ‘‘evidence,’’ which would be sent to state investigators for prints. But Luonuansuu would not specify what the evidence was.
Township Trustee Peter Augusta said the totaled cruiser was a used Crown Victoria cruiser the small police department bought from the Highway Patrol. Augusta said another cruiser could cost about $5,000 to $7,000.
‘‘I’m just glad no one got hurt. We can buy another cruiser,’’ Augusta said.
The Tribune Chronicle requested copies of the dispatch recordings. Incident reports from the Highway Patrol and the Newton Township Police are pending.

Maybe it is a good time to look at centralized 911 dispatch and maybe save the town some money at the same time if the local dispatch can't get the job done. The patrolman might be a great person and a good cop but he sure used some really bad judgment to leave a car parked on the railroad tracks.

how about this, they used 'evidence' to make a call to someone and pretend to be someone involved talking about how they need warren twp to plant the cell phone in the crime scene as they unknowingly taped THEMSELVES on a voicemail that has been copied .. Ya lets give the cops some credit. Ya right.

Does anyone think that Colosimo doesn't know he f'd up? Come on, he will be cited for it and it will haunt him the rest of his career. He simply got excited and made a mistake. Luckily no one got hurt. Accidents happen, this is what insurance is for. He is a good cop that made a mistake, it happens.

I understand that he might have been using his spotlight to light up the area along the tracks. But it is just plain wrong to leave ANY car parked on the railroad tracks at any time. Wouldn't anyone else would be cited for intentionally leaving a vehicle parked on the tracks.

What, no misfeasance, malfeasance, or nonfeasance here!? Perhaps the the Ohio House and Senate can conjure up a Bill for Strickland to sign allowing an outside investigation by CSX to make a "D"termination!?Hmm?

Does anyone think that he had parked his cruiser on the tracks to use his lights to see the people he was pursuing? That could be one reason why it was on the tracks. Also..does anyone question why the dispatcher took so long to call CSX? Anyone find out why it took them 15 minutes to pick up a phone and make the call? If the dispatcher had done their job like they are supposed to, the cruiser might not have been hit. If CSX couldn't get the train stopped, the dispatcher could have notified Officer Colosimo. Question everything before you start blaming the cop.

Stupidity is covered by Insurance. Why do you think we all have to have it?How many accidents are just,"Plain old poor judgements?"Ease up on the cop until the facts are known. At least the man was out of the cruiser, attempting to do his duty. Not so long ago,Liberty Township had a terrible tragedy that may have been prevented if the police has been on foot, seeking and searching out the cries of a needy woman. So all the headhunters out there,"Call the bank for a loan next time you make a Gigantic error in judgement",not the Insurance Co...Bad mistake.Good intentions.Sounds human enough.Happy no one was injured or worse.

If it wasn't so dumb it would be funny. I with the rest of you, I think he should have to pay, not the tax payers. It seems everytime a public official screws up the taxpayers are paying for it. It is not right.

I think Tom Colosimo screwed up. Why would you park your cruiser on a railroad track while chasing suspects? I don't buy his story. He should pay for this mistake, not the citizens who normnally pay for cruisers.

I am totally glad that no one was hurt in the train crash but in the same time the officer should have moved off the tracks then proceeded in the chase. Come on now, 2 more seconds to get the car off the tracks doesn't make a big difference. Now the tax payers will have another headache, paying for another cruiser. Where is the common sense at here.
