Bad bill: Why target only teen drivers?

September 29, 2013

DEAR EDITOR: I cannot believe that a state lawmaker is trying to pass a bill that would prohibit teenagers from having even one passenger in a vehicle while they are driving (At a glance, Sept....

Totally agree. And does this man think because it's a law it's kids will follow it? He needs to get real. Sure there a young people in accidents but there are 20 yr olds, 30 yr olds right in through the numbers everyday. This guy needs to spend his time worrying about more important things like jobs, balancing the budget, true affordable healthcare instead of worrying about how old a driver is and whose riding with him.

I agree I can tell you this we have had more near accidents because the elderly have pulled out in front of us. They talk about teens not paying attention we have not had a teen driver pull out in front of us. This bill is stupid I think what they should do is after a certain age you should have to retake your drivers license test.

Just another DUMB idea from a Republican NeoCon in Columbus. This is what you get when you elect jack_asses to the legislature who play to special interest groups instead of what is good and right for the majority of the people in Ohio.

Ms. Smith- I totally agree with you. My husband and I were in a bad accident in May. The driver was an 89 year old man who didn't see my car, t-boning it, though my car was very hard to miss. It happened on a very clear day at 10:00am. He was driving a rental because we suspect he had just had a recent accident with his own vehicle.

Update: My husband just informed me that the same 89 year old driver (lives in our neighborhood) nearly t-boned my husband and his teen aged son just 10 minutes ago! I couldn't believe the coincidence since I had just commented earlier about this dangerous driver.

Two different issues.

Go sit in a school parking lot when school is getting out and watch them zip in and around people and cars. The have more than one person in the car, looking around to see who is watching them, and start showing off.

Then a couple weeks ago, I was in the DMV office. A woman came in, couldn't walk, couldn't hear what the salesperson was saying, and barely passed her vision test. I waited for a good five minutes so she would clear the parking lot before I left the building.

Take care of both issues.

Those statistics that clearly show the rise in accidents and deaths when the youngest of our drivers have multiple deaths and injuries when accompanied by other youngsters in their cars are really "all wet". We can't believe in the statistics. And if we think we might believe in them, let's change the issue and talk about older drivers! That's right FG. Everyone knows that those elected to the legislature arise each morning and say to themselves: "Let's go out and CONTROL others' lives". Sheese! Your attitude would change if someone in your family were one of these "statistics".

my attitude twords older drivers come from almost getting T-boned by a old lady who could barley see over the steering wheel or the countless old people who pull out in front of you either because they don't have the skill to pay attention or their eye sight is bad and they can't see you. I know some teens are bad drivers it is called the learning process but we can't just punish the young teens who are bad drivers with out punishing the old ones who cause accidents to. I am sorry when you endanger my life with your bad driving that is when I have a problem.

I can prety much guarantee that if this stupid piece of .........legislature.....had been proposed by a Democrat, WarrenProud would have been all over what a great law it would be and how any "Racist NeoCon Republican" that voted against it was doing so becuase they hate children and teenager and want to see them killed in car accidents.

Billdog, the increase in the number of horses would add to global warming....er....cooling...er....climate change because of the amount of methane produced from their manure. You need to rethink your proposed law.

Ridiculous is right. Let's pass this so that our kids can keep texting each other while driving to make sure they can all get together. THAT won't increase accidents. The amount of stupidity in this country never ceases to amaze!

I didn't say that it wasn't proposed by a Republican. They also do a pretty good job of proposing idiotic laws. I just pointed out that had it been proposed by a Democrat, WP would have thought it was the greatest piece of legislature ever proposed.

What a stupid short sighted bill. I know several teens who work at the same place and depend on rides to and from work by their peers.

Many teens also have the responsibility of running younger siblings around while the parents are working.

And it wasn't a teen driver who pulled out of Sparkle Market and nearly t-boned me while hitting the car directly behind me.

It was a sweet little old lady who had no business behind the wheel. Poor old girl had no clue she had even caused an accident.

This bill is very unfair and punishes young people who have done absolutely nothing wrong ! SCRAP IT !!! BTW....I'm no kid I'm 56

Excellent letter! Lone teen-age girls driving the back roads and urban streets of Ohio is one of the dumbest and most dangerous thing I have heard .
