I say put this thief to work, picking up litter and help maintain veterans grave sites, mowing ect, then at night return to his jail bunk.

What idiots! Why do that to a grave site. Let the deceased rest in peace.

I agree with both Bear and K but I'm afraid K is right. These guys apparently don't have two dimes between them so monetary restitution is out of the question.

However there are other ways they can pay their debt to society and in this case that certainly doesn't mean sitting around in the county lock up for 30 days.

I'm sure the cemetery that was robbed can always use some cleaning and mowing and they're plenty of injured and disabled vets whos' yards need mowed or homes need painted or simple maintenance done.

And of course the V.A.hospital can always use volunteers. Justice would be better served by the guilty if they were made to give back to the vets they disrespcted.

Perhaps by doing so they just may realize how wrong and disgraceful this action was a lesson that can't be learned sitting around behind bars playing cards all day.

Bear while I agree restitution should be made, if they are stealing to make $25.00 how much do you think can be collected from them toward restitution? Probably more $ in court costs and oversight than could be collected. Perhaps work off the debt? Might end up the same way. <sigh>

Jail time is good as far as it goes. If found guilty (always have to add that), they should be made to shoulder of the costs of repair or replacement of the statue.

No one wins in a situation like this, least of all the taxpayer and the victim. At least make them pay for the damage they have done. I think it should be like in as many cases as possible.

I agree with the comment in the article that it is "creepy" to steal from a grave. These perps need to have the book thrown at them and I do hope Judge Rice gives them the maximum allowable sentence.

Also, it is too bad that there aren't the funds available to replace the statue instead of repairing it.

Junkie no doubt. I'm sure the one high they got from this disgusting act will be a memorable one.

I have nothing but gratitude and respect for all of our veterans and those currently serving our country.

What kind of low life trash steals from a cemetery ? What a shame we can't give our veterans a bronze marker for their final resting site for fear some scumbag will steal the markers to sell for scrap metal. Even worse are the greedy buyers for such items !

You can't even place a bronze flower urn at a loved ones resting site for the same reason. I know Judge Rice respects our vets and I hope he throws the book at everyone involved in this theft.

Does anyone know if a fund has been set up to help pay for the repair of the statue ? That's something I'd be glad to contribute to.

Don't the metal scrap yards have some kind of responsibility to call the police when someone brings in something of this nature?

I went to school with Couturiaux and this story saddens me. I think that they should make an example of these two far beyond just raising the bail amounts. I didn't know Couturiaux well, but I'm thinking that there has to be some extreme issues for him to scrap this huge statue with an accomplice for a whopping $25 bucks. I will pray for him and pray that it is not a drug addiction/gambling addiction/alcohol addiction situation. I'm glad that they vets showed up for the court hearing.
