With variety comes vitality

Being a ‘‘people person’’ is one of the most important qualifications to have when running a senior center, local directors say. Several area senior center directors, whether new to the job or experienced, say they all share the same important quality of being able to relate to and communicate with the senior citizens who come to their centers. Janet Schweitzer, executive director of SCOPE, said when she hires people for the centers in Cortland, Champion, Howland, Lordstown, Niles and Warren, she is looking for candidates who like people and will work at providing activities and opportunities for the senior population, who today vary in age from individuals in their 50s to those in their 90s. ‘‘They have to be people-oriented and organized. The person has to be someone who can do community social work,’’ she said. Schweitzer said she likes to have people who will work with seniors, keep them active and help them ‘‘age with style.
