Treasure hunting conjures up images of bearded prospectors, yellowed maps and dark caves — not exactly high tech. However, a modern version, called geocaching, is capturing the interests of many around the world. According to Geocaching.com, the official Web site for the pastime, “The basic idea is to locate hidden containers called geocaches outdoors, and then share your experiences online.” Caches are located using GPS systems, with coordinates posted on the the Web site by the cachers who hid them. Locally, Theresa Edwards, who has been geocaching since April 2007, said she first heard about geocaching by word of mouth. “It was actually how a lot of people get involved,” she said. Edwards signed up for a free account online, and went on her first hunt shortly thereafter. “There’s quite a few people who do it,” she said, adding that it is simple to get involved in, and can be done alone or in groups.
