Forget the stereotypes — In defense of the one and only
While helping me at a community event for my day job recently, Kyle was being a typical 8-year-old, chattering boisterously, asking about a bazillion questions of those around him and basically causing a bit of a ruckus. A woman within earshot looked at me pointedly and asked, “Is he an only child?” “Yes,” I replied in total anticipation of what was coming next. “Mmm hmm. I thought so,” she said That’s when she shot it over to me. The “one baby mommies just don’t get it” look. Listen, people, I am fully aware of the stereotype about only children being spoiled, obnoxious brats. Does my son fit that description? Sometimes. Then again, most times he’s a well-spoken, kind-hearted, cherub-faced little troublemaker. And, just for the record, only children don’t have the market cornered on unruly, selfish or otherwise bad behavior, folks.
