'The Dark Knight' has more than comic books on his mind
Many movie critics and those who consider film an art form bemoan the summer movie season for its lack of ‘‘serious’’ fare. The preponderance of movies based on comic book characters is exhibit A in their argument. But the best genre films — like the science fictions films of the ‘50s that worked as allegories about the public’s fears of communism and the atomic age — always have illuminated their era and addressed the issues of the day. ‘‘The Dark Knight’’ is no exception. The plot of Christopher Nolan’s film, co-written with Jonathan Nolan, clearly is shaped by the events of 9/11 and the Iraq War. It’s a movie that argues that ethics and morals and rights are easy to champion when things are going good.
