Memories fell along with Harding’s Fieldhouse
The old building had to give in to time and fall to the ground as humbly as is possible under the destructive hands of demolition workers. Later this year the space where the Harding gymnasium once stood will serve as additional parking space near the new Warren G. Harding High School. Concrete and yellow parking stripes will take the place of the shiny hardwood basketball court on which thousands of games were played. Unlike the football facility, which is widely known as Mollenkopf Stadium, the gymnasium was never given an official name. When covering a game there, reporters usually referred to it as the Harding fieldhouse or gymnasium. One Harding graduate remembers it being called the ‘‘steam house’’ because of the lack of adequate ventilation. My nurturing years as a basketball fan were spent almost entirely at the Harding gym.
