Awful Browns laid giant egg
If ever a score doesn’t tell an accurate story, it’s the 37-34 victory by the New York Giants over the Cleveland Browns last Monday. On the surface, the score indicates a close game. In reality, the Browns were lousy in an audition for three Monday Night Football games in the regular season. More specifically, the first teams looked like they had done the club scene in Manhattan the night before the game. They looked like players who are tired of the drudgery of training camp in falling behind, 23-3, after one quarter and 30-3 early in the second period. Cornerback Eric Wright was hit for a pass-interference penalty of 53 yards and then was beaten by Domenik Hixon on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Eli Manning four plays later. Running back Jamal Lewis fumbled a handoff, turning a potential Browns’ touchdown into a 95-yard return of the fumble by James Butler for a Giants’ touchdown. The special teams looked equally as bad.
