Eating for your health

Heart disease is the number one killer of adults in America, yet people still don’t understand that we are what we eat.

Stuffing ourselves with fast food and high calorie junk won’t get us on the road to recovery. The fact is, when you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always had. It’s time for a change.

The five changes are these: Don’t smoke. Drink at least a half glass of wine each day, but not more than one full glass if you are a woman and not more than two if you are a man. Maintain a healthy weight. Get at least 30 minutes of moderate or vigorous physical exercise a day. Eat a healthy diet.

It looks pretty easy, but in reality, it is difficult to make major life changes.

I’m always preaching baby-steps and I still believe this is true. Just a few small changes at a time can add up to big results later. Cut out one bad lifestyle habit a week and replace it with a good one. It is said that after 21 times of repeating the good habit, you own it.

I have one more to add to the list; reduce stress. More than 90 percent of the heart-related issues that affect women today are preventable according to Health magazine.

Breakfast today was a bowl of Kashi Heart to Heart cereal, a banana and a cup of skim milk.

Lunch was a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on whole wheat bread and a cup of vegetarian vegetable soup.
