Challenging fitness

As most readers of our newspaper are aware, we have begun the annual Fitness Challenge.

Teams have formed, charities are chosen and participants have begun taking off the pounds.

This year I decided to join one of the teams and have been working on my own fitness program for a number of reasons.

This spring, I have committed myself to walking a marathon in Washington D.C. for breast cancer research. Sponsored by Avon, these walks are held at various venues across the country each year. A few family members and myself have decided to become a part of the tradition.

It’s going to take a bit of fundraising on my part to be able to take part in the walk, but that’s not even the hard part. It will take a lot of training and stamina building to get through two days of walking nearly 19 miles each day. I’m both looking forward to it and am a little nervous.

I’m not exactly a youngster, but I’ve always been competitive. Once I make a commitment, I follow it through. This looming challenge as well as the Fitness Challenge should be exactly what I need to stay motivated.

No goal should be set without a plan to reach it.

As someone that lives and works in DC, I can say you'll have a fun time. DC is a "walking mans" city and there's a lot to look at (you'll rarely get bored).

The one thing a lot of people tend to forget about DC is that it's built on a swamp and since then, it's now somewhat transformed into a hill. Be prepared to sweat a whole lot (it's the climate) and practice walking distances on an incline. When marathon day comes, you'll be ready.
