Great college weekend ahead
November 23, 2012 - Dana Sulonen
It's weekends like this one that make being a sports writer a pretty cool gig.
On Friday morning, while people were still battling long lines for televisions and gaming systems, I was driving to Kent State University to watch the Golden Flashes take on the Ohio University Bobcats.
When I decided to cover this game about a month ago, I thought the stakes for this game would be much higher. I thought today would decide which of the two teams would be making the trip to Detroit to represent the East in the Mid-American Conference championship game.
However, Ohio lost three out of its last four games, and combined with Kent staying perfect in the conference, the Golden Flashes stamped their ticket last week when they defeated Bowling Green to represent the MAC East against Northern Iowa next Friday for the MAC title.
There is still something to play for at Dix Stadium today. The Golden Flashes are trying to become the first team since Miami of Ohio in 2003 to go without a loss in the MAC. Also with that win last week, Kent clinched the best record in school history. Now at 10-1, the 2012 Golden Flashes beat the 9-2 record set in 1973. An 11th win would be icing on the cake. Also, ranked at No. 23 in the BCS, Kent I'm sure would love a few extra notches up in the standings going into next week's title game.
And that's just my Friday. Then there's Ohio State-Michigan on Saturday. But that's a blog for tomorrow.
